What is a Brain Injury?
A traumatic brain injury is defined as a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the function of the brain.
With the many different parts of the brain, each injury differs. It’s a considered a “silent epidemic” because the effects of a brain injury can be either invisible or be attributed to another cause.
According to the Brain Injury Association of America, some of the visible effects of a brain/closed head injury include:
- Visual impairment
- Impaired logic
- Difficulty understanding language or speaking
- Behavioral problems
- Confusion
- Fatigue
- Decreased control over body movements
Complications can arise from a brain injury from a coma to even brain death.
Causes for Brain Injury
The leading causes of TBI are falls, followed by getting hit by an object and auto accidents. The people most at risk of traumatic brain injuries include:
- Children, especially newborns to 4-year-olds
- Teens and young adults between the ages of 15 and 24
- Elderly adults ages 75 and older
